Job Summary:

The primary function of the Clinical Supervisor is to supervise and direct the activities of the staff and the departments to meet the customer’s needs and to achieve optimal patient outcomes.  This is done through planning and collaboration among coworkers and nursing leaders from other departments as needed.  The Clinical Supervisor demonstrates professional nursing skills through effective leadership, nursing judgment, informed decision making, problem resolution, and appropriate utilization of resources.  The Clinical Supervisor serves as a role model and supports BAMC Service Care Standards in daily activities.

Essential Job Functions

Leadership and teamwork

  • Supervises daily operations of Surgical Service departments, to include staffing, issue resolution, and efficient use of resources.

  • Motivates others to best performance by recognizing achievements, mentoring others, and managing work behaviors to ensure staff development.
  • Maintains employee relations to include recruitment, retention, discipline, staffing schedules, staff concerns resolution, staff recognition, and performance appraisals for direct reports
  • Assures completion of competency assessment and performance appraisals for staff.
  • Mediates conflicts by using hospital and unit policies and procedures to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Leads by example by modeling professional behaviors and Service Care Standards.
  • Participates in assigned unit activities and teams as indicated.
  • Encourages and practices open communications among all staff
  • Reinforces teamwork through role modeling and recognition
  • Attends required leadership workshops and/or meetings

Patient Flow:

  • Assures completion of daily assignments utilizing staffing plans and approved staffing ratios.
  • Coordinates communication with physicians, anesthesia providers, hospital staff, and patients/families.
  • Assists with coordination of daily schedule to ensure efficient use of resources.  Communicates changes to appropriate personnel and patients as needed.
  • Monitors start times, room turnovers, and work flow and addresses issues as needed.
  • Communicates pertinent information regarding department or patients to Director

Staffing

  • Participates in yearly budget development and evaluates and reports staffing variances biweekly.  Completes financial analysis monthly and addresses issues.
  • Ensures staffing schedules are completed according to timelines specified in contracts, policies, etc.
  • Ensures productivity guidelines are followed.
  • Provides clinical consultation and support to coworkers and other care givers.
  • Works as liaison between medical and nursing staff

Quality Management

  • Actively participates in department PI initiatives and publically reported data and assists in development of action plans for outcomes not meeting targets.
  • Reviews policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines, and ensures department compliance.

  • Investigates and reports risk management events and ensures appropriate forms are completed.

  • Holds department accountable for quality measures—time outs, sterilizer monitoring, etc.
  • Adheres to Infection Prevention practices and consults as needed.
  • Monitors and supports compliance with National Patient Safety goals

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintains competencies in surgical procedures as needed, Phase I Recovery, Sedation, and other competencies as determined by technology or service changes.

  • Adheres to JCAHO professional standards and BAMC policies and procedures.

  • Adheres to professional standards and recommendations of AORN and ASPAN and SGNA

  • Additional duties as may be assigned by your supervisor and/or director.

Qualifications:

  1. Current registration in Wisconsin.

  2. American Heart Association BCLS and ACLS required.Competency in Sedation and Airway Management required.

  3. Demonstrated commitment to Service Care standards.

  4. 2 years previous management experience required with demonstrated organizational skills.

  5. Member of professional organization supporting surgical services preferred.

  6. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  7. Computer experience required.(Meditech or EPIC preferred.)

  8. Must have high energy level with ability to work under stress of the operating room atmosphere and exhibit emotional maturity, stability, and flexibility.

    Working Conditions: 

    Potential exposure to Latex products, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases. Exposure to body fluids, human tissue, contagious diseases, and sharps as well as unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.  Exposure to electrical current. Environment is climate controlled.
