TITLE:                    CLINICAL NURSE MANAGER OF SURGICAL SERVICES


Department:           Inpatient Surgery, Outpatient Surgery, PAR, GI Services Sterile Supply, CVIS

Reports to:             Director of Surgical Services

Supervises:            Surgery RNs, ORTs, POAs; Schedulers & Other Support Staff; PAR RNs; Presurgical RNs and support staff; Pre and Post Operative               

                              Staff, GI Servces RNs, LPN, Technicians, and Aides; CVIS RNs and Technicians; Sterile Suppy Aides


Job Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Manager of Surgical Services is a registered, professional nurse who supervises and directs nursing care of the surgical, CVIS and GI patients according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and the hospital.   The Nurse Manager provides leadership, clinical expertise, and functional direction on a daily basis to members of the surgery and CVIS care team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Supervises daily operations of INP and OP surgical, CVIS, Sterile Supply and GI services, to include staffing, issue resolution, and efficient use of resources.

  2. Develops, implements, and measures the achievement of annual “Leadership Evaluation Management” goals for performance improvement for Surgical Services which are consistent with the mission, vision, values, corporate priorities, and strategic plan of Bay Area Medical Center in alignment with the focuses of BAMC’s Vision: Quality, Service, Cost, Growth and People.

  3. Motivates team by recognizing achievements, mentoring others and managing work behaviors, to ensure staff development.

  4. Implements plans aimed at providing quality patient care, capturing market share, and expanding the services to answer the needs of the community we serve.

  5. Participates in yearly budget development and evaluates and reports staffing variances biweekly.

  6. Reviews daily charges to ensure accuracy.Ensures inventory of supplies and equipment is maintained at appropriate levels to meet patient needs.

  7. Maintains employee relations to include recruitment, retention, discipline, staffing schedules, staff concerns resolution, staff recognition, and performance appraisals for direct reports.

  8. Develops and implements plans for staff development and competency.

  9. Monitors customer satisfaction and resolves issues for physicians, patients, and visitors.

  10. Reviews policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines, and ensures department compliance.

  11. Communicates daily plans to appropriate staff and provides progress reports as needed.

  12. Implements and evaluates performance improvement initiatives and reports outcomes to appropriate staff.

  13. Participates in multidisciplinary committees, teams, and task forces to facilitate process improvements, as needed.

  14. Investigates and reports risk management events and ensures appropriate forms are completed.

  15. Works with other department directors in order to maintain quality patient care throughout the facility.

  16. Assures that the departments meet all local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines, including TJC and Medicare requirements.

  17. Contributes to organizational community relations.

  18. Strives for WOW experiences in Customer Satisfaction initiatives through planning, implementation, follow up and monitoring.

  19. Models and promotes the Service Care Standards in achieving customer satisfaction and employee engagement initiatives through planning, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring. Responds to all patient concerns in a timely, compassionate, and effective manner.

  20. Must be able to complete the physical, sensory and mental requirements of the position.

    Position Specific Responsibilities:

    Additional duties as may be assigned by Director of Surgical Services.


Qualifications:

  1. Current registration in the State of Wisconsin.
  2. BCLS, ACLS required.  Conscious Sedation competency required within 30 days of hire.
  3. 3-5 years Operating Room and/or management experience with demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
  4. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Computer experience required.  (EPIC Preferred.)
  6. Must have high energy level with ability to work under stress and exhibit emotional maturity, stability, and flexibility.  Must be able to handle multiple priorities.
