TITLE:  Evening Clinical Nurse Manager, Med/Surg

Department:  Med/Surg                 
Reports to:  Director of Med/Surg                     
Supervises:  RNs, LPNs, CNA, Unit Secretaries, Telemetry Technicians and PCTs

Job Summary:
The Evening Clinical Nurse Manager is a registered, professional nurse who supervises and directs the nursing care of the Med/Surg Department according to the policies, procedures, philosophy and strategic goals of the organization. The Evening Clinical Nurse Manager provides leadership, clinical expertise and operational direction on a daily basis to the direct care staff to achieve efficient, quality, patient focused care in a professional, service excellence environment. The Evening Clinical Nurse Manager will be responsible for quality monitoring, reporting, and results presentation, and for the unit based preceptor and continuing education programs. The Evening Clinical Nurse Manager will engage the Staff through the utilization of staff empowerment. At times this position will support the staff by participating in direct patient care. Scheduled hours include evenings/nights and rarely days as necessary for department needs.
 
Essential Functions:
  1. Supervises and supports the effective daily operations of the Med/Surg Department, to include staffing, patient flow, issue resolution, and efficient use of resources.
  2. Collaborates with and empowers staff in the development and implementation of performance initiatives and monitoring of related outcomes aimed at improving quality, patient safety, service care, efficiency and cost effectiveness and supporting employee satisfaction.
  3. Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of department goals.
  4. Participates in annual budget development and monitoring of financial parameters.
  5. Manages staffing per established staffing matrixes.
  6. Ensures inventory of supplies and equipment are maintained at levels that meet the patients and staff’s needs.
  7. Manages employees to include recruiting, interviewing, discipline, staffing, schedules, staff concerns resolution, staff recognition, competency requirements and performance appraisals.
  8. Collaborates with Director and Daytime Clinical Nurse Manager on needs assessment and development of educational efforts to maintain competency of staff.
  9. Monitors Service care initiatives and participates in the development and implementation of new initiatives as outcomes require.
  10. Resolves service care issues for physicians, patients and families.
  11. Participates with the development of performance improvement plans.  Has knowledge of policies, procedures, clinical guidelines and ensures departmental Compliance.
  12. Collaborates with Director on staff meeting agendas and co-chairs staff meetings.
  13. Investigates and reports risk management events and ensures appropriate paperwork and follow up is completed timely.
  14. Works closely and openly communicates with other organizational leaders to maintain quality patient care and safety throughout the facility.
  15. Assures that the Department meets all local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines, to include JCAHO, State and Medicare requirements.
  16. Contributes to the organizational community relations.
  17. Prepare time and attendance records using Kronos in a timely manner for each pay period.
  18. Serve as chair for inpatient satisfaction team as well as serve as consultant for unit council.
  19. Responsible for maintaining Staples account and ordering supplies as needed.
  20. Serves as a role model of professionalism and Service Care Standards. At times this position will support the department by participating in direct patient care.
  21. In collaboration with the Department Director, is responsible for the design and implementation of the new employee preceptor program and continuing education programs for the Med/Surg staff.
  22. In collaboration with the Department Director, is responsible for unit based quality monitoring, and reporting and presenting the results. Additional duties and tasks as assigned by Director.
  23. Must be able to complete the physical, mental and sensory requirements of the position.

 
Qualifications:
Education:                          
Current WI RN license, BSN required.     
 
Training and Experience:           
Must have 5 years clinical nursing experience within area of specialty, with demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.  Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Must have strong critical thinking and process management skills.  Must have sills in adult education.  Must have expertise in data analysis and display. Ability to multitask and prioritize.  Ability to maintain high energy working under stress and exhibit emotional maturity, stability and flexibility. BCLS required. ACLS & PALS preferred; must obtain within 1 year of employment. Computer experience required:  MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows Operating System. Meditech preferred.
