TITLE:                       NURSE EXTERN

Job Summary:
The Nurse Extern is a current nursing undergraduate who performs patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Nurse Extern may assist professional and technical personnel in the care and treatment of patient, some of whom may require constant supervision and observation.
Essential Functions:
  1. Understand and live the BAMC Mission and Values.
  2. Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  3. Report any observations, unusual occurrences or changes in the condition of the patient to the Registered Nurse.
  4. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of patient care.
  5. Documents appropriate information accurately in the patient record.
  6. Communicates pertinent information regarding patient, physician, personnel concerns, and unit activities to the Director.
  7. Maintain good working relationship with all hospital employees and physicians through appropriate communication.
  8. Assures responsibility for own personal growth.
  9. Maintain current CPR training.
  10. Upon showing proof of completion of a pharmacology course the extern can administer medications and provide care according to the following guidelines under the direction of a Registered Nurse:

May - under the direct supervision of an RN:
  • Change peripheral IV site dressings and tubings
  • Convert peripheral IV lines to intermittent infusion devices – in presence of preceptor.
  • Change IV bags/bottles with additives
  • Monitor IV rates
  • Perform venipunctures on patients with good access within the guidelines of the BAMC policy, including not to exceed 2 attempts per patient.
  • Administer medication by the following routes:  Oral, IM, Subcutaneous, IV Push, IV Piggyback
  • Obtain blood specimens from intermittent infusion devices.
  • Care for specialized cannulas; e.g. multilumen, arterial, longlines, central lines i.e.; Hickman and Groshong catheters, and intravascular access devices.  This care includes changing of IV tubing, flushing or aspirating from catheters, changing dressings, and removing catheters.

May NOT:

  • Administer blood or blood products.
  • Administer the following medications:  Cytotoxic drugs, Research drugs 
11. Must be able to complete the physical, mental and sensory requirements of the position.
Enrolled in a National League of Nursing (NLN) accredited nursing program and has completed two semesters of clinical training.  (Between Junior and Senior status in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an Associate Degree in Nursing program.)               
Training and Experience:            
Prior CNA training preferred.  Healthcare provider CPR training required. Successfully completed a pharmacology course.
Working Conditions: 
Potential exposure to Latex products, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases.
