TITLE :                      Pharmacy Day Technician

Job Summaries:

Variable shifts, Variable weekends

These tech positions will primarily rotate through the four day shifts of 0600-1430, 0700-1530, 0800-16300 or 0930-1800 or whatever shift assigned by the pharmacy director.

Performs routine technician jobs on a daily basis including IV preparation, medication order processing, and medication delivery, charging and crediting of medications, medication history collection and assisting the pharmacists in the performance of their duties.

Essential Functions:

  1. Proficient in IV preparation.
  2. Previous experience or shown proficiency for the Chemotherapy process:

  • Pre-work preparation
  • Ability to properly use chemotherapy references available
  • Ability to aseptically and safely mix chemotherapy in the necessary timeframe
  • Ability to perform the necessary complete documentation
  • Ability to perform the necessary safe transfer, waste disposal and clean-up of chemotherapy area and barrier isolator.
  1. Responsible for advanced Pyxis functions.
  2. Responsible for pharmaceutical stock and the re-ordering process ( under the guidance of lead techs)
  3. Maintains a basic understanding of medications stocked for the various age groups that we service – newborns through geriatrics.
  4. Strong phone communication skills
  5. Understanding same day surgery procedures and medication needs
  6. Perform moderately difficult dosage calculations
  7. Computer skills – navigating the electronic health record
  8. Must be able to meet the physical, sensory and mental requirements of the position.
  9. Performs patient medication histories as directed by pharmacists.

Additional Responsibilities:

Assists the other staff pharmacists, and the director of pharmacy in the performance of their duties.


High school diploma or equivalent required, at least 1 year previous tech experience or graduate of an accredited pharmacy tech program preferred. Must have previous work experience as a pharmacy technician. Previous chemotherapy preparation experience preferred and ability to show proficiency. Certified pharmacy technician training preferred.

Must successfully complete pharmacy technician exam that demonstrates fractions, decimals and conversion capabilities.  Strong attention to detail with accuracy essential. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions, and the ability to complete work assignments within a given timeframe. Due to access to narcotics and other drugs, successful candidates will not have a recent criminal history related to theft or drug-related activities.

Working Conditions:

Almost always standing, some walking, lifting and pushing. Some exposure to patient elements. Works in a high stress environment.
