TITLE:                       REGISTERED NURSE - FLOAT IR/OPS/GI


Department:             Surgical Services

Reports to:               Charge Nurse / Clinical Nurse Manager of Surgical Services/Director of Surgical Services

Job Summary:

The primary function is to implement the nursing process in providing direct patient care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and gerontological patients in Interventional Radiology, Outpatient Surgery and GI pre & post-op Services.  The staff nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing actions for surgical/invasive procedure patients before, during and after procedures according to standards of care and practice of BAMC.  This position requires floating to Interventional Radiology, GI services, or Pre/Post Operative Care areas. 

Essential Functions:

  1. Assesses the physiological and psychosocial status of perioperative/GI patients.

  2. Establishes an outcome-oriented plan of care based on nursing diagnosis.

  3. Implements nursing interventions according to the prescribed plan:

  4. Reviews reports of diagnostic studies and reports deviations appropriately.

  5. Develops an initial record to include assessment, results of appropriate diagnostic studies, consents, and teaching needs.

  6. Verifies patient status by thorough review of medical records and presurgical assessment data.

  7. Provides verbal and/or written instructions to patients/families based on identified needs using understandable and correct terminology.

  8. Prepares patient for surgical or other invasive procedure(s).

  9. Assists in the set-up of the rooms prior to IR procedures.Assembles necessary instruments, equipment, and other supplies.Ensures functionality of appropriate equipment to meet patient needs.

  10. Assists with procedure, i.e. scrub, monitors and circulates.

  11. Demonstrates vigilance throughout the procedure, anticipating the needs of the patient and the procedural team.Monitors and controls the environment.

  12. Administers medications as needed for the procedure under the direction of the physician.

  13. Performs time-outs and counts according to established policies and procedures.

  14. Anticipates patient needs in preoperative, intra-procedure and Phase 1 and Phase 2 postoperative periods.Monitors patient status and keeps physician informed.

  15. Prepares patients for discharge following department(s) criteria and policies and procedures.

  16. Promotes physical comfort and provides emotional support and safety for the patient.

  17. Administers medications according to hospital policies.

  18. Provides age appropriate care for all age groups.

  19. Clearly communicates results and documents nursing actions taken.

  20. Evaluates nursing actions and communicates and documents patient outcomes, maintaining accurate documentation of patient and procedure.

  21. Collaborates with radiology services to ensure radiation safety and to meet all state, local and federal requirements for x-ray equipment.

  22. Adheres to TJC professional standards and BAMC policies and procedures.Attends training sessions as directed.

  23. Restocks and organizes supplies and equipment for unit(s), as needed.

  24. Maintains competency in IR, GI, and Pre/Post-Operative Care.

  25. Must be able to complete physical, sensory, and mental requirements of the position


Additional Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

  1. Current registration in Wisconsin.
  2. American Heart Association BCLS & ACLS required.
  3. Must remain competent in cardiac rhythm interpretation.
  4. Moderate Sedation and Basic Airway Management Competency required within 1 week of hire.
  5. Previous recent experience in IR procedures, pre/post op care of GI and OPS patients.
  6. Must have excellent organizational and communication skills and be able to prioritize multiple tasks.
  7. Must have high energy level with ability to work under stress and exhibit emotional maturity, stability, and flexibility.

Working Conditions: 

Potential exposure to Latex products, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases.  Exposure to body fluids, human tissue, contagious diseases, and sharps.  Exposure to electrical current.  Environment is climate controlled.
