TITLE:                       REGISTERED NURSE

Department:             ICU/IMCU

Reports to:               Department Director, Clinical Nurse Manager, Supervisor,

                                    Charge Nurse

Supervises:              Patient Care Technician

Job Summary:

Perform total patient care utilizing the nursing process in collaboration with physicians and other health care providers.  Demonstrate professional nursing skills through effective leadership, nursing judgement, informed decision making, problem resolution, and appropriate utilization of resources.  Provide specialized care for critically ill patients according to the standards of care of BAMC and American Association of Critical Care Nurses specific to age and the individuals’ needs.

Essential Functions:

  1. Understand and lives BAMC’s mission and values.
  2. Perform patient care and collaborate with other health care providers to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  3. Perform patient education, evaluating patient learning ability and response to teaching, demonstrating the ability to adjust care and teaching to the age and emotional status as well as the social and cultural needs of the patient.
  4. Delegate and/or assist aspect of care to team members and review on completion.
  5. Demonstrate and utilizes critical thinking skills in situations involving physicians, visitors, patients, and staffs.
  6. Maintains competence in all critical care nursing skills and concepts.
  7. Promote and maintain confidentiality.
  8. Demonstrate adaptability to changing nursing trends.
  9. Communicate pertinent information regarding patient, physician, personnel concerns, and unit activities to the Director or Clinical Nurse Manager.
  10. Participate in planning changes and improvements.
  11. Assure responsibility for own personal and professional growth.
  12. Must be able to complete the physical, sensory and mental requirements of the position.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participates in orientation of new employees in clinical situations.
  • Participates in hospital wide and/or department specific committees as approved by management of department.
  • Floats as requested to other departments according to “float policy”.
  • Adheres to JCAHO professional standards and BAMC policies and procedures.
  • Additional duties as may be assigned by your manager.


  • Current RN registration in the State of Wisconsin. 
  • Maintains current American Heart Association CPR. 
  • American Heart Association ACLS required.  May consider candidate who is able to complete certification within 8 weeks of hire. 
  • PALS completion within 6 months of hire.
  • Must remain competent in cardiac rhythm interpretation.
  • Critical Care course certification within six months of hire. 
  • Recent (within 3 years) Critical Care experience required.  May consider experienced RN with current ACLS certification. 
  • Must be a good team player with demonstrated positive communication skills. 
  • Must comply and embrace BAMCs mission, vision as part of their daily practice
  • Must model and support all Seven Services Care Standards at all times.
  • Must have a high energy level and ability to work under the stress of an intensive care atmosphere while exhibiting emotional stability, maturity and flexibility at all times.
  • CCRN encouraged.

Working Conditions:  Potential exposure to Latex products, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases.
